The stage at St. Catherine School in Picture Butte is set for big laughs, heartfelt moments, and a few wobbly teeth as students from Grades 6 to 9 present Junie B. Jones: Toothless Wonder, running from April 10–12, 2025.
Co-Directed by Associate Principal, Mr. Josh Gatner, along with Mrs. Nicole Fuller, the junior high drama production has been months in the making. Students and staff have dedicated countless hours to bringing Barbara Park’s beloved character to life.
“We’ve been rehearsing since Christmas, so there has been a lot of time spent on this,” said Mr. Gatner. “Now, in this final week, the kids are standing up and running the full show in costume. You can start to see them really have fun with it and come alive. That’s the magic of theatre, and we’re excited for opening night.”
The play follows first-grader Junie B. Jones, who’s facing a lot of emotions. She’s nervous about losing her first tooth and hurt after not being invited to a classmate’s birthday party. With the help of her family and friends, she learns to navigate childhood challenges with humor and heart.
“It’s super fun,” said Grade 8 student Sage Campmans, who plays the title role. “Junie B. is going through things that a lot of our younger students at St. Catherine’s can relate to—like being nervous or left out—but she’s got people who support her. It’s really funny, and I think everyone’s going to love it.”
For Sage, the experience has been not only fun but also rewarding.
“We’ve had a lot of fun putting it together and getting to know everyone,” she shared. “What’s great is having a variety of ages in the cast. The younger grades learn from the older ones, and when the Grade 9s leave, those kids will be ready to step up and teach the new batch next year.”
That mentorship is something Mr. Gatner sees as a major strength of the production.
“As a smaller school, including students from Grades 6 to 9 is key for building a strong cast. But the real benefit is watching the older students pass along skills and confidence to the younger ones. It’s amazing to see.”
Beyond acting, students are also building props and sets, and even running sound and lighting for the show.
“It’s very student-run,” Mr. Gatner added. “There are so many opportunities for students to try new things, step out of their comfort zones, and take ownership of something creative.”
While the play is filled with humor, it also connects across generations.
“This play is going to connect with everyone,” said Mr. Gatner. “Whether you’re a child, a parent, or a grandparent, the themes of growing up, finding your place, and having support from those around you are universal.”
With relatable lessons, laugh-out-loud moments, and a cast of passionate young performers, Junie B. Jones: Toothless Wonder promises to be a highlight of the school year—and a memory these students will carry for years to come.
