West Side School Exterior Rendering 2The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is delighted to announce that our new elementary school in West Lethbridge will be named St. Kateri Elementary School.

This decision was made official at the Board of Trustees Meeting held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Currently under construction, St. Kateri Elementary School is expected to open its doors to students in September 2026. The naming of the school is an exciting and significant step forward as the division continues preparing to welcome new students and families to this growing area.

“The members of the Board of Trustees are excited to share the name of our soon to be newest school after a much-loved North American Saint,” said Dr. Carmen Mombourquette, Board Chair for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division. “St. Kateri’s life story of a faithful witness will inspire children for years to come.”

Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the “Lily of the Mohawks,” is remembered for her unwavering faith in the face of adversity. By naming the new school after St. Kateri, the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division honours the rich Indigenous heritage of the land and people while reinforcing its mission to nurture students in faith, learning, and community.

The name will stand as a symbol of hope - a bridge between cultures, a tribute to resilience, and a powerful reminder of the strength and potential within every child who will learn and grow within the walls of St. Kateri Elementary School. Rooted in Gospel values, our newest school will be a nurturing home of inclusive, Christ -centered learning.

We look forward to sharing more information with our community in the months ahead as the project continues toward its anticipated opening in Fall 2026.

Please continue to keep this wonderful new venture in your prayers as we joyfully build toward the future - guided by the light of St. Kateri.
